Ravenswood Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel 2004 Tasting Notes

Ravenswood sources the grapes for this $12 Zinfandel from a number of Sonoma County properties, providing excellent value and a solid drinkable wine for the money. The wine is thick and full-bodied, with plenty of extracted fruit and a satisfying fruity finish.

The initial notes of the wine are an ambitious mix of smoke, thyme, and orange peel, with layers of both cocoa and tobacco. The fruit comes through solidly thereafter and remains on the job: cassis, blueberry, prune and dried cherry. Couched in a medium level of acidity, the fruit is viscous without being overly sweet, yielding just a touch of fragrant jam on the finish.

The wine has a slightly bitter dried rosemary edge from the mid-palate through to the finish, but this only serves to nicely cut the concentrated fruit, especially at the end, generating a final coda that fades out with some elegance.

The sum of the wine is that it is well-made, stimulating to drink, a little brassy and fun, with complexity if you want it, and a great California grape behind it.

Verdict: Delicious
