What is it?

Unlike inflammatory bowel disease, no one know what causes irritable bowel syndrome. Doctors have a hard time diagnosing it. It is often self-diagnosed. Rather than being a true disease, it is more a functional issue. Whatever the truth, if the person you care for has irritable bowel syndrome, certain nutritional strategies are thought to help reduce or prevent flare-ups.
