Monterey River Road Wine Trail
</title>
     <link>
http://www.stylegourmet.com/wine/tas00237.htm
</link>
     <description>
Monterey receives little rainfall and yet has ample irrigation water, an ideal
water-when-you-want-it scenario. The legendary California sun brings a growing season that
may last 210 days. Seven months of sun and water alone could result in ultra-potent and not
particularly interesting hot climate wines, but Monterey's wind and fog palliate these effects
rather nicely, making the region ideal for the production of cool climate varietals like
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

eclipsing the thirty year mark. Zaca Mesa is committed to sustainable viticulture on its 750

The 2004 D-Block Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep garnet, one of my favorite wine
colors. The nose is mid-level in intensity, perfumed with violet and cassis, and a slight
nuttiness. This is sophisticated, structured wine.

The grape is the Vidadillo de Almonacid, known over the centuries as Crespiello. The source
grapes for this wine were planted in 1900 in limestone soils and see some harsh dry
conditions. Only two vineyards in Spain produce this nearly extinct grape.

     <description>
Use Wine to Make Sense of the World is the new book by award-winning
wine and food writer Elliot Essman, a civilized romp through the limitless world of wine,
written with a true sense of whimsy and fun. The book takes an ambitious interdisciplinary
look at how we can use wine to dig deep into the experience of life, love, the senses, our
bodies, our thought processes, and more.

     <description>
Big swings in day and night temperatures make for excellent color and flavor development;
the stony humus soil cooperates to keep the vines in place in what is otherwise a harsh arid
climate. Irrigate this soil to the optimum degree, add state-of-the-art modern equipment both
in field and winery, and you have a recipe for success.

Chozas Carrascal divides its vineyard blocks almost mathematically, allocating equal sized
three hectare blocks to the production of international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc as well as
Spanish natives Garnacha, Bobal, Monastrell, Tempranillo and Macabeo. These wines are
brought to the United States by importer Alex Berlingeri.

The wine is a bright golden-tinged straw. The soft bubbles hit the nose first, followed by
aromatic notes of golden delicious apples, peach, ripe lemon and biscuit. In the mouth the
wine is off dry, residual sugar nicely balanced with forceful acidity. The big surprise in the
mouth is the soft foamy mouthfeel enhanced by seawater minerality.

Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Moscato 2008
</title>
     <link>

</link>
     <description>
Robert Mondavi believed in producing wines with crisp acidity that are well balanced
with food. The 2008 Moscato is a light greenish straw in color, teasing my nose with gentle
aromas of peach, apricot, honey and white flowers. The wine is about 5% sugar (52 grams
per liter) giving it a sweet flavorful edge but by no means pushing it into the dessert wine
category.

     <description>
Macari's 2004 Reserve Merlot, $36, is a bigger statement entirely, a mainstream Merlot with
good red plum, cherry, cedar and vanilla on the nose, darker fruit with baking spice and
vanilla on the palate, very well rounded tannins and some firm acidity to move all that fruit
along to a rather drawn out finish. Ripeness and well-used wood are the keywords with this
wine.

Israel's Upper Galilee mountain range is situated in the country's extreme north, east of the
Golan Heights and hard by the border with Lebanon to both the north and the east. In this
area high altitude mitigates low latitude; the thousand meter plus vineyards see snow in
winter, a welcome phenomenon for vines that need to go dormant to get their proper beauty
rest.

Despite the connection between wine and ancient Israel, the modern Israeli quality wine

certainly the case here.

the palate.

The $18 wine sits elegantly in the glass; visually it is medium gold at the least, verging onto
a deeper late summer goldenrod, with excellent clarity. The nose is pronounced, highly
aromatic, and ripe: peach, mango, nectarine, citrus flower and dried apricot lead with some
light spice.

Bridlewood Estate Winery Santa Ynez Valley California
</title>

     <description>
Once an Arabian horse farm and equine rehabilitation center, the Bridlewood Estate Winery
in Santa Ynez is more than pleasing to the eye. The Spanish-California architecture dovetails
into the surrounding hills and vines. Inside the winery building itself, the massive wooden
doors between the building segments proclaim a proud thoroughbred heritage; the twin steeds
on Bridlewood's logo and bottle labels are no accident. These former stables now please the
senses (at least those of wine buffs) with the stainless steel of fermentation tanks and the
carefully-crafted oak of aging barrels.

The creation of wine, from grape in the field, to a mushy mass in the winery, to ultimate

furthered by technology.

Those who look for quality over the whole of Italy, and not just the north, think highly of the
Aglianico grape; this Taurasi, from Campania, and the Aglianico del Vulture, from Basilicata,
give us the two flagship wines.

shine through.
