The Problem of Processed Foods
We’ve already mentioned condiments and sauces. Canned foods often use a great deal of salt as a preservative. Frozen foods rarely do. Prepared meats like bologna, hot dogs, salami, bacon and sausages are high in salt, as are most canned fish like herring, sardines, tuna and anchovies. Bouillon cubes and powdered soup mixes are high in sodium, as are many prepared soups in cans. Most cheese (unless labeled low sodium), is salt-rich. Snack foods like popcorn, corn chips, potato chips, and pretzels are basically salt delivery vehicles; their high salt is what makes them so addictive. Pickles and most olives are extremely high in salt. Prepared frozen microwave meals are usually high in sodium. Even milk has about 120 mg of sodium per eight ounce glass.
The sad truth is, nearly every convenient prepared meal or snack is a sodium carrier. Fresh food adds little sodium. The choice is clear.
Homework: Get in the habit of reading the nutritional content labels on prepared foods. It doesn’t take complicated math to see how daily sodium consumption can easily exceed recommended levels, even for healthy people.
