Fats and sodium.
Beyond the issue of carbohydrates, fats are also important:
- Avoid high fat dairy items or meats high in saturated fats (bacon, hot dogs, most
beef, sausages, processed meats).
- Cut down on fat content by avoiding pan-frying, or especially, deep-frying.
- Watch for the trans-fats often found in snack foods, baked goods and margarines.
Look for the increasingly common “No Trans Fats” labeling.
- Watch for cholesterol content from high-fat animal and dairy products, and eggs.
Whether or not the person in home care is on sodium restriction, it is best for the
diabetic to avoid the high levels of sodium found in many snack and processed foods.
